Inspired by the traditional mōkihi watercraft of Aotearoa, the Mōkihi Seesaw brings cultural storytelling into play. Traditionally constructed from flax or bulrushes, mōkihi were lightweight rafts used by Māori – particularly in Te Waipounamu (the South Island) – to travel across waterways and gather food resources.
The seesaw’s elongated, boat-like form recreates the gentle motion of a mōkihi navigating rivers, encouraging children to work together to generate movement while developing balance, coordination, and cooperative play.
Originally developed as a bespoke feature for the themed play area at the Caroline Bay Playground in Timaru, the mōkihi seesaw connects play with local history, culture, and storytelling.

- Steel frame with a rope net deck, supported by a central ground-mounted pivot system that allows smooth rocking movement.
