Wake Park Playground

A custom playground design inspired by local history

Hamilton City Council is committed to creating neighbourhood playgrounds that reflect the unique character and stories of the communities they serve. At Wake Park in the Hamilton suburb of Dinsdale, that vision inspired a heritage-themed playspace celebrating the stagecoach routes that once connected settlements across the western Waikato.

Working alongside BHW (Brodie Hailwood) and Fluhler Contracting, Playground Centre collaborated on the design and construction of a bespoke ‘Western Wagon’ inspired tower. The result is a distinctive neighbourhood play destination where history and adventure travel hand in hand – and every climb, crossing and descent is a fun-filled journey of discovery.

An all-round adventure play experience

The custom-made themed play structure has been designed as one continuous play experience for children of different ages and development stages.

The landscape architect’s design brief and original concept guided the design of a tilted wagon with a sloping deck, wagon wheels and side detailing, multiple platform levels, slides and climbing access. The design team also considered how the wagon would sit alongside a separate spider-net climber planned for the site – refining its climbing elements to ensure they expanded, rather than duplicated, the experiences on offer in the wider playspace.

The result is a distinctive play structure that invites children to explore it in different ways. They can scramble up the sloping coach tray using a climbing rope, scale the timber sides, climb over the wagon wheels, and race back down the winding slide before setting off on their next adventure.

Every route presents a different level of challenge, encouraging children to test their confidence, coordination and problem-solving skills and engage in imaginative role play with whanau and friends. Beneath the coach and around every corner, new opportunities for discovery ensure the play experience feels different every time they visit.

By combining imaginative storytelling with interconnected movement, this single, cleverly designed structure delivers remarkable play value.

Bespoke play equipment, brought life

Realising the vision called for a close collaboration between Brodie Hailwood, Fluhler Contracting and Playground Centre to translate an ambitious concept into a durable, buildable and safe piece of playground equipment.

Playground Centre worked alongside the landscape architect to refine custom detailing, optimise the structure for manufacture and installation, and make sure every element contributed to both the heritage narrative and the overall play experience.

By working with Playground Centre in the design stage, the landscape architect achieved their design goals while drawing on our specialist expertise in play value, customisation and manufacturing of play equipment.

The result is a striking centrepiece where creative design thinking and bespoke craftmanship meets modern playground engineering.
