We are a one-of-a-kind school to have our own Ninja Warrior Playground on our school oval, built specifically for our Years 3 to 6 students”

Good Shepherd Catholic School

Ready, set, challenge!

Good Shepherd Catholic School wanted to give its Years 3 to 6 students more reasons to get moving – with a high-energy play experience that made getting active feel a lot more fun.

Inspired by the excitement of Ninja-style obstacle courses, the school approached Playground Centre with an idea for a fitness course around its grounds. Together, we shaped that idea into a compact, action-packed Ninja playground where students could climb, balance, build strength, challenge themselves and have plenty of fun along the way.

The goal was to deliver loads of play and fitness value while making clever use of the available space and minimising the impact on existing school activities.

Smart design for the way students play

Playground Centre worked closely with the school to develop the initial idea into a practical solution that suited its students, site and budget.

The design needed to:

  • Combine strength, climbing, balance and agility challenges
  • Offer opportunities for students to test themselves and progress
  • Make fitness feel fun and inviting
  • Work around existing athletics and field use
  • Meet Australian playground safety requirements
  • Maximise play value within the available budget.

The school also took students to try similar Ninja-style equipment at a local park, giving the team valuable insight into how they responded to the different challenges. Playground Centre used those observations to help refine the equipment mix and layout, shaping the final design around how the space would really be used.

The result was a collaborative approach that turned an exciting idea into a practical, purpose-built solution for Good Shepherd’s students and school grounds.

Ninja-inspired play, built for action

The finished course brings traditional fitness activities together with custom Ninja-inspired challenges in one energetic circuit. From the Cliff Hanger Fitness Station, Ninja Wall Jumps, Ninja Rope Climb to the Turbo Challenge, Rotating Balance Log and 2.5-metre Ninja Climbing Wall, students have plenty of ways to climb, grip, balance and put their strength and agility to the test.

Rather than spreading fitness equipment around the school grounds, the activities were brought together into one compact play zone. This reduced the amount of safety surfacing required and created a stronger destination for active play. The course was positioned in an underused area of the playing field so it could deliver plenty of action without compromising athletics or other uses of the oval.

The circuit-style design also gives students the freedom to use the space in different ways – tackling the full course, focusing on individual challenges or creating their own routes with friends.

The real win: stronger through play

The real win is that students don’t have to think of it as exercise.

They can race their own times, set new goals, challenge their friends or simply jump in and have a go. Grouping the activities together also encourages play outside structured PE lessons, creating more opportunities for movement and social interaction throughout the school day.

Along the way, students are building strength, balance, coordination and agility while also developing confidence, perseverance and positive competition.

For the school community, the result is a distinctive and well-used outdoor space that puts the fun into fitness – and gives junior students exciting reason to get outside, get moving and challenge themselves.
