Active, healthy, all-inclusive fun in Aintree
The $15.3 million Aintree North Recreation Reserve is a district-level active open space precinct for Melbourne’s fast-growing western suburb. Opened in April 2025, it delivers sport, recreation and play opportunities for all ages and abilities – from soccer fields and youth spaces to a playspace designed for shared fun.
Melton City Council partnered with Woodlea Estate’s developers, MDGLA and Playground Centre to ensure the playspace achieved its goal: free, inclusive and accessible fun for residents. The result is an activity hub where children and families can play and socialise together and build lasting connections.
An inclusive, sensory play experience
At the heart of the playground is a custom-designed, wheelchair accessible play structure, set within a mega-sized sandpit, where children with and without disability can participate in a wide range of activities.
Working alongside MDGLA, Playground Centre supported the selection and integration of specially designed inclusive and sensory play equipment into the elevated structure and broader playspace.
The innovative play structure features a wave slide, climbing wall, rope net ladder, and xylophone – encouraging physical, social, and sensory engagement.
Other equipment choices included:
- Custom and standard Sandplay Modules for creative play and tactile exploration.
- An Inclusive Carousel. A whirl of fun, this playground favourite has the capacity to accommodate wheelchairs and prams and includes seating for caregivers.
- A 2-Bay Deluxe Swing fitted with a Special Needs Seat for safe, supported swinging.
More than just a playground, the Aintree North Recreation Reserve has become a dynamic community destination that inspires and supports an active, healthy outdoor lifestyle and will be enjoyed, by all, for years to come.
“Spaces like these make it easier for people of all ages and abilities to take part in regular exercise, social connection and outdoor activity. ”
– Cr Steve Abboushi, Mayor of Melton City Council
