Where play and connection come naturally
Barry Powell Reserve has been transformed from an ageing local playground into a vibrant district destination where fun and discovery are woven into the landscape.
Working alongside the City of Greater Dandenong and project partners, Playground Centre helped deliver a nature-led playspace designed to encourage movement, curiosity and outdoor connection across all ages.
Key goals were to reduce the use of plastics, create wider recreational opportunities, and better integrate the environment.
Crafted predominantly from Australian plantation-grown hardwood, the playground feels warm and inviting – with curving pathways drawing everyone through a fantastic choice of play elements, from adventure course to pendulum swing.
Designed for longer stays
A treehouse-inspired adventure tower, flying fox, family carousel, multiple swings and multi-station activity trail are artfully placed among rock features and garden beds – inviting children to explore freely and play instinctively.
Guided by community consultation, the expanded playspace caters to a wide range of ages, abilities and confidence levels. Inclusive swing and spin options welcome all, while the accessible pathways link play spaces with generous picnic areas, seating and BBQ facilities to inspire long, relaxed family outings.
The reserve has also been designed to grow greener over time, with more than 50 new trees planted throughout the site to increase shade and canopy cover as they mature.
From forest to playground
For Barry Powell Reserve and many projects across Australia, Playground Centre sources purpose-grown Australian hardwood from sustainably managed plantations in NSW.
These forests are managed in planned rotations, selectively thinned to support healthy growth, and continuously regenerated to ensure a renewable, long-term timber resource for enduring playspaces.
For playgrounds, “wobbly wood” does more than look beautiful and support sustainable playground design. It offers tactile stimulation, encourages imaginative and open-ended play, and can challenge balance, coordination, and spatial awareness.
Design and build playgrounds for bigger adventures
Playground Centre collaborates with councils, communities and landscape architects across Victoria and Australia to create district-wide destinations that bring people together. Using sustainable natural materials and thoughtful design, we help transform local parks into much-loved gathering places for generations.
