A small park with smart new moves

Grant Street Reserve proves a playground doesn’t need a big footprint to make a huge difference.

When it came to revamping the community’s existing playground, Hastings District Council wanted to expand play opportunities and inclusivity while keeping the playground’s friendly neighbourhood feel.

Playground Centre’s redesign included smoother access, sensory-friendly spaces and eco-smart materials – with some familiar playground favourites kept in the mix.

The result? A colourful space that’s easier to navigate, more inviting to use, and ready for even more tamariki and whānau to roll on in and join the fun.

Familiar favourites, fresh energy

To support different sensory experiences, the playground balances active challenges with quieter zones and gentler ways to play.

The upgrades also integrate nature-play and multi-generational features suited to the area’s family vibe.

Existing and much-loved swings, slide and spinner elements were retained, with new additions including a custom timber teepee-style play hut with a slide and climbing logs, mini in-ground trampoline, double embankment slide and a pendulum swing with basket.

Wheelchair-accessible and low-level elements allow more children to join in with confidence – while tactile surfaces, scented native planting and visual play features create a more sensory-rich experience throughout the space.

The bright soft-fall surfacing is made from old tyres and sneakers, creating a durable and smooth foundation for wheels, prams, mobility devices and little legs.

Benefits beyond play

The refresh supports Council’s goal to retain the calm, local feel of the area while offering more opportunities to play and gather.

The playground is fully fenced and there’s extra seating for parents and caregivers to relax – making for longer stays that dial down the stress.

It’s a practical upgrade with a very human outcome: more families feeling comfortable using the space in their own way.

Bigger possibilities through smarter playground design

Playground Centre helps councils in the Hawke’s Bay region and across New Zealand rethink neighbourhood parks through inclusive play, sensory-friendly design and smarter use of space. The result is local playgrounds that feel more welcoming, more flexible and better suited to the way families use parks today.
