Play Priorities

The Nga Puna Wai Sports Hub is the home of Canterbury athletics, hockey, tennis and rugby league making it a major focus of the sports loving community of Christchurch and the surrounding region.

Purpose-built by the Christchurch City Council as a centralised sports complex where everyone is welcome to take part in sports, support the players or use the sporting fields and facilities, it is a hive of activity all year round.

Complementing the health and fitness theme imbued throughout the complex, is a Playground Centre play space that ensures younger children aren’t just ‘sitting on the sidelines’ while the older kids and adults play.

Fun Solution

Kids have an absolute ball on the play space we helped create at the Sports Hub.

With the goal of providing multiple play and fitness-focused activities for a large number of children, we specified the 5.5m Mt Aspiring – Variant 1 climbing structure.

Up to 60 children can play on the Mt Aspiring at any one point thanks to its clever design – offering high play value in a relatively compact footprint and at an attractive price point.

The pyramid-like climbing net structure is made from robust Hercules Rope and provides strength and agility challenges across three, multi-dimensional tiers. Adding to the versatility of this piece of equipment is the capacity to connect other balance and coordination building apparatus to increase the play and developmental benefits. For the Sports Hub, we worked within the Council’s budget to add an overhead ladder and rung bridge that allows young players to enter the Mt Aspiring at a higher level.

And of course, all of this was given the custom colour treatment to match the bold red and black of the might Canterbury sports teams.
